I don't like to skate in a skirt (one of my coaches made me, and I did, but it's really just because I'm too lazy to wear tights) but I have to skate in leggings now- anything even a little loose around my ankles freaks me out when I backspin.
Yeah, it took me awhile to get used to a skirt, or leggings. I skate in a mall, and sometimes I have to run to the Target afterwards, and I'd rather go in my skating skirt than my leggings. If I go in my skirt, then people know it's a "costume", if I go in leggings, I worry people with think that I actually am wearing that as an outfit. It's not cute.
However, I caught my blade once on a backspin and nearly pulled my pants off, and took a bad fall instead, so leggings it is.
If you aren't in a public rink, then leggings/skirt isn't quite as bad, because the only other people there are skaters, and chances are even if they are rail thin, they worry about how they look too.
Woah! How did that happen?

Lunges! I don't like to skate in a skirt or leggings because I'm not pencil thin. But I'm not willing to risk tearing all my pants either.
