Sing me a song

I am still working towards testing Pre-Bronze MIF (maybe August 19, OMG!) Like other skaters I was struggling to get 4 crossovers on the perimeter stroking end pattern. This was discussed recently on Skating Forums.

Today, during practice I made a break thru! I came up with a little song to help me with the timing and placement of the crossovers. It goes like this; "Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...in the circle around the dot, before the box, after the box, in the circle around the dot and Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...Stroke...in the circle around the dot, before the box, after the box, in the circle around the dot, presentation and stop!

I'd love to say that there is a tune that I sing this to, but I have no rhythm, so it's more like a chant than a song. Either way, it really helped me today to get 4 crossovers on the end pattern without ending up on a flat.

The Pattern!

Basic 8 Frustrations

After lessons at The Other Rink, on Thursday night I left feeling really frustrated. Some of my frustration might have been blood sugar related, but mostly it was skating related.

I am really struggling with the last few Basic 8 elements; the mazurka jump and the 1 foot spin.

Somehow I skipped right over the beginning 1 foot spin in Basic 5, so I was starting from scratching learning it for Basic 8.  I've been working on it from a pivot, to a 2 foot spin, then lift my foot; but I either, drop my hip (and subsequently put my foot down) or rise too far past the ball of my foot and onto my toe pick.

By the time the adult group lesson started, I was on the verge of tears. I spun until I was dizzy and only had 1 or 2 spins that were passing standard.

The skating school director was watching, so she stepped in an suggested I try a different entry. So I worked on the scratch spin entry. I started on a tight small RFO edge (I spin CW) keeping the free foot behind me. As my skating foot starts to turn in (almost a 3-turn), I bring my free foot in and pull my arms in.

Like this, but LFO to LFI

It took a few tries to get comfortable with the sharp RFO edge, then a few tries to bring the foot in and spin (I practiced this as a 2-foot spin to begin with). I was able to do the 1-foot spin this way and get 2 revolutions ( I need 3 to pass) so I think I will practice it this way in addition to practicing it from the pivot.

I didn't work on the Mazurka in the adult group lesson, because I worked on it for nearly the whole Basic 8 lesson. I have the set up for the jump and a pretty strong LBO edge, the actual jump is where I struggle. I complete the LFI 3-turn, pick with my R foot and pivot and then stop, instead of kicking through and up. When I do manage to jump hop, it's with a bent knee, so it doesn't look like a mazurka.

It's a difficult jump to practice off ice, so I need to devote a lot of time on ice to practicing it. I need to pass this jump since it is the pre-cursor to the Toe Loop.

The needs of an Adult Figure Skater

I heard from a friend who skates at Home Rink occasionally that she had come across my blog, linked off another site (although she couldn't remember what site). But it made me think, "Wow, people are accessing my blog. Maybe I should post more often."

As an adult skater, I am a unique demographic. We adults face different difficulties than the kiddos do. Our bodies are not children's bodies, we have a healthy fear of falling, we are responsible for the costs of our own skating, and our goals are slightly different than younger skaters.

I am very fortunate that Home Rink and The Other Rink have great Adult programs, but some rinks and some coaches are not adult skater friendly. Maybe they don't understand the needs of an adult skater?

In my not quite humble (though I try) opinion adult skaters need;
  • a LTS curriculum (doesn't matter ISI or USFSA are both fine). I hate adult group lessons where there are 5+ students at different levels and only 1 coach, who says "work on whatever you want." then attempts to help each student individually all in a half hour class. Personally I can't progress this way, so I take group lessons with the little kids and follow their curriculum.
  • Practice ice available at a time that is considerate of work hours. I frequently skate on the early morning freestyle ice (which might actually be listed as an Elite freestyle, but they don't mind sharing with me), because we have no practice ice available. It's all either public or freestyle.
  • Adult numbers in all the shows. I was really disappointed to find that Home Rink excluded an adult number from the Spring Show (subsequently I am not participating)
  • A coach who understand adult skaters.
  • Group Off-Ice warm up. I've told the directors at Home Rink and The Other Rink, that I would gladly pay additional tuition to have a half hour off ice warm up, led by a coach.
  • Group On-Ice warm up. I'd put this a little less important than off-ice warm up, but still important. These muscles need that extra few minutes of movement, to perform well.
This is my list, what is on yours?

It's been announced; the spring ice show at IceTown in Riverside will be.........

Also the annual Orange Twist ISI Open is coming up on March 31st - April 1st. I'm not competing, in fact I am not competing at all this year so I can focus on testing.

After Exercise BG - 92 mg/dl
Total drop = 67 mg/dl

Me
Beginning BG - 128 mg/dl
After Exercise BG - 126 mg/dl
Total drop - 2 mg/dl (so not fair!)

Christmas Wish List 2011 - Skating Edition

Last year by this time I had all my Christmas shopping complete, however not this year.

To expedite shopping for  my family I want to make sure they know exactly what to buy. There will be no ugly sweaters under my tree!

Footwork Sequence

It seems that when you pass the basic skills levels, in addition to learning "big" jumps, you are supposed to be capable of piecing together the basic skills to create sequences or patterns.

This is fine in theory, but in practice not so much. I've got a few footwork sequences I am working on for my lessons and for the Christmas Program.

Adult 4/Basic 8 Sequence: Forward crossovers (2) into forward inside Mohawk, cross behind, step into backward crossover (1) and step to forward inside edge

Solo Program: (L) forward inside Mohawk, L over R step (crossover ISI style) (R) outside Mohawk R over L step.

Adult Group Program: 2 forward strokes, 2 forward crossovers, forward (L) outside Mohawk, 2 backward crossovers, Back Outside edge to Forward Outside edge transition, repeat 2x.

All this is supposed to be accomplished with speed and grace.

I'll try to get it them all on video this weekend :)

True or False

It is National Health Blog Month, and while it isn't really relevant here, I liked today's prompt.

So I already posted this over at Mrs. Harer's Hollow, but I wanted to extend the offer to my readers here.

Tell us 3 things that are true about you, your condition, your Health Activism, or your life. Now tell us 1 lie. Do you think we will be able to tell the difference?

Exciting right? I happen to have a natural talent for making up "stories" so lets see if you can figure out which fact is not true. Leave your answer in the comments and I will enter all the correct answers in a give away for a really cool handmade diabetes awareness brooch or a skating diabetes awareness brooch!

  1. I like to skate really really fast.
  2. I recently landed my first waltz jump.
  3. I am a lefty (I spin/jump CW)
  4. I currently have lessons/rehearsals with 7 different coaches.
Okay so you tell me, which one is false.

Talent runs in the family?

I come from a skating family. Both my Aunts skated. In fact my Aunt Sandy skated professionally.
Isn't she lovely?
Aunt Sandy, I stole the picture off your Facebook page, hope you don't mind!

My cousin KJ skates on an up and coming synchronized skating team. My youngest sisters took LTS lessons before they moved out of state (and about 4 hours from the nearest rink.)

When I was little my sister C, took LTS lessons also, but she is 3 years younger than I am, so when I quit she was still under 8 years old.

Sister C hasn't been on the ice in 18 years, can some please explain to me, how she was able to do some really decent forward crossovers at the rink today? The girl didn't hang onto the wall at all and was zipping around the rink, like she was born on the ice.

Talent must run in this family!

Christmas Solo

Private Coach finished choreographing my Christmas Solo today. I was lucky enough to have someone available to videotape my first complete run through of the the Solo without the music. It's slow and stiff, but I've got a month to practice it. I'll post updated videos as it improves.

* This is the first run thru of the program, so please be kind!

Competition Update

Since I posted here about my plans and prep for the July Center Ice Arena ISI Open, I figured I should update you all on how it went.

I competed in Delta with my Pirates of the Caribbean program and placed first!

I also competed in Delta complulsory; which included left inside 3-turn, Bunny hop, and lunge. I cleanly skated each element but then fell on a t-stop at the end. I placed 3rd.

My skates

I've had my new skates since August. They are the Riedell 435TS boots with the Ultima Matrix Legacy blade in pink!

At first I didn't like the blades, I couldn't stop and was terrified of tripping over the much larger toe pick. However I've adjusted, the blade sharpening has dulled slightly and I love them.  I recommend this blade for every low level freestyle adult. Plus it comes in cool colors like pink!

The boots I loved from the very moment they were heat molded to my feet. They are so comfy and I don't feel like they've had a break in period at all. I did spend the first two months skating with the top hooks unlaced, just to help with ankle bend and toe point. Now I lace them all the way. I also love the lace lock, it really does keep the laces from loosening.

My skates have one more feature that isn't found on most skates. It is my SkateSafe tag by FinishSafe. This handy little tag stores all my medical information which can be accessed via a pin number by rink staff or emergency response personnel. Now that I am no longer withholding information about my health, I feel much safer on the ice.

Standard vs Adult Test track

I am considering testing USFS MITF next year. Although I am having some trouble deciding between testing adult track or standard track.

I don't think I plan on competing, but if I did want to compete USFS, I would need to test adult track.

But the standard track seems to make more sense in skill chronology.

If I test Adult Pre-Bronze, the test will include;

  • Forward Perimeter Stroking
  • Basic Consecutive Edges
  • Forward and Backward Crossovers
  • Waltz Eight
  • Forward 3 Turn Pattern

I know I am capable of passing the Adult Pre-Bronze test, so I'll probably just stick with that.

It's beginning to look a lot like

Rehearsals for the Center Ice Arena Winter Wonderland Show have been underway for 2 weeks. Every Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon, skaters of all ages and skill levels come together to learn and perfect their program numbers.

I will be skating a solo as well as 2 group numbers. So I've been putting in a lot of ice time, and it has really paid off, but more about that later. For now I'd like to share with you the costumes for my group numbers. I happen to think they're very cute!

Adult Group Number, skated to Sheryl Crow's "There is a Star that Shines Tonight."

Basic 4-8 Group Number, music unknown
Both dresses are by Revolution Dancewear.

National Blog Posting Month 2011

Well this is new for Blade Bunnies, considering it didn't exist last November. For those who don't know how National Blog Posting Month (NaBloPoMo) works; it's basically a promise to post everyday all month long.

As far as I know, this is the only skating blog participating, so I hope I measure up!

Competition Prep

The Center Ice Arena ISI Open is next weekend!

Since I was injured in June (not skating related, I tripped over a curb!), I missed a little over 2 weeks of preparation and practice. This is a brand new program and the loss of practice time has really had an impact. I don't feel competition ready at all!

The program, which I love (Thank you Trista!) will be skated to Up is Down by Hans Zimmer from the Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End.

I am competing at the ISI Delta level which requires; a Left Inside 3-turn, Right Inside 3-turn, Forward Outside and Inside edges, and a Lunge (or Shoot the Duck). Give or take a few minor adjustments, here is my program;

My new competition dress is a custom dress from Icexquisite. I love it!

So I've got the program, and the dress now all I need is the ice time to practice......

Practice Dresses

I learned a lesson at the rink this weekend.....

This is why skaters wear practice dresses.

I think I need to invest in some. Otherwise my new competition program may destroy my wardrobe.

Sorry for the disappearing act, my laptop died and I was too lazy to go into the office and use the desktop!

So I am officially a freestyle skater now!

ISI freestyle 1 curriculum includes;

Pivots
Backward Consecutive Edges
Two Foot Spin
Forward Arabesque (Spiral)
Waltz Jump
Half-Flip Jump

I am an USFS Basic Skills Member

Today at Home Rink, I received my official USFS membership packet and my membership card should be there next week.

The packet included a record book, with all the USFS levels and elements listed in order, a sheet of gold star stickers, that can be placed in the book as each element is learned, a basic skills program patch and year patch.

I am trying to decide where to put my patches; on my skating sweater, or on my skate bag, or somewhere else entirely? Any suggestions?

It was also our first day of Basic Skills lessons. It is just myself and one other skater in the Adult 4 class. Coach M is coaching Adult 4. I was sort of disappointed, the lesson plan didn't seem much different than it had been. I was expecting to work specifically on the list of Adult 4 elements, but we didn't. We spent more than three quarters of the lesson doing crossovers, then rushed through some forward outside 3-turns. Which actually brings up another frustration I have, Coach M teaches the arm position for 3-turns opposite of all my other coaches, I don't want to blatantly say he teaches "wrong", but it seems that way!

Private coach and I worked on spirals today. It was fun.... kinda. I am much more flexible on my right side, but more stable on my left, it is weird.
